How to Write a Good Fantasy Novel
2019.10.19
Fantasy literature has a profound impact on our lives. These kind of works set in an imaginary universe and include many elements, such as magic and supernatural. It is no doubt that mythologies and folktales are categorized in fantasy literature. In the past, mythologies influenced those who hadn’t received well- education a lot and poor families taught their children through folktales. Nowadays, even though education system substitutes for it, we can’t underestimate its fantastic power. For instance, Harry Potter, a fantasy literature hitting the world, makes profits about several billion dollars. If you hope to create such kind of fantasy story but don’t know how to conceive, there are 3 steps for beginners about how to write a good-fantasy story.
In the first step, determining a theme is an important beginning in your novel. The theme is a big topic, lesson, or message you want to express to your readers. Therefore, in order to make readers understand what you want to convey, you should keep the ideas in a suitable plot and delete additional events. Let’s see the picture 1 below. Setting a theme makes every plot more coherent, which a lot of writers are not able to be familiar with because they want to embrace lots of elements into fictions in the beginning. On the other hand, if your inspiration is limited, building a powerful theme will be a wise choice as well. Taking picture 2 for example, beginner sets the topic, the consequence of violence with violence, and creates a father as a major role. However, important events or results have not come to his or her mind. It is helpful for author to develop plots through the linking picture of theme. If the role is a procurator with a strong sense of justice, unfortunately he can’t bring the murderer into justice by judicial process for his innocent children. Writers surely should ask themselves which kind of action of roles meets the topic. In this way, readers are able to understand the powerful topic without explicit words like old-fashioned text books.
After you set a perfect topic, it is time to create a dilemma associated with the theme of novel. Dilemma refers to a situation in which a choice must be made or both of selections are equally good or bad. As a result, leading characters in such circumstance are forced to make a meaningful, misery, or ethical decision that results in desirable outcomes for authors, even irretrievably fatal mistake for characters. It should be noticed that such plots usually lead to a climax in relation to novel topic. For example, in the play Hamlet (picture 3), a wide-famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare, main roles were stuck in the complicated relationship. One of the leading characters, Hamlet, was struggling to kill his uncle who murdered Hamlet’s father in order to usurp the throne. Nevertheless, Ophelia, who deeply fell in love with Hamlet, hope that he could get out of the sorrow. To everyone’s disappointment, it turned out finding that she was involved in the part of a revenging plan and brutally abandoned. In this case, all dilemmas successfully lead to climax in a close relation to central topic: To be or not to be, this is the question.
At last, as important as the novel theme, image the distinct personality belonging to certain role. Beginners have no idea what kinds of characters can catch readers’ eyes, but the key to appealing readers’ heart is very simple: make readers appreciate them by virtue of personalities. I offer several personalities that readers tend to love, such as dependable, modest, humorous or a little bit arrogant. In my opinion, I think negative personalities make the main role more similar to a true person. Readers thus will empathize with characters encountering fortunate or misfortune. On the contrary, it is impossible for all roles to make readers feel pleasant particularly villains. People tend to dislike the people who break promises, tell lies, or perform overly intellectual. What kind of character appears in your fiction naturally depends on you needs.
It is so tricky to produce a successful fiction. However, if you patiently follow the 3 steps, writing will not be only exclusive to professional authors. First, remember to devise the theme of a novel and make good use of association with every idea to make your work more coherent. Then image the main role who struggle in a difficult situation and the last is making your characters specific. It should be noticed that every role shows its distinct aspect as encounters different event. As a result, don’t give them only charming advantages, or readers perhaps will feel that she or he is too perfect to be intimate. After fully learning all skills, please remember that all the steps above are in a close relationship. For example, a dilemma would be an implicit metaphor to guide the topic implying people what you want to talk about. Similarly, a significant turning point would stimulate different sides of the role. If beginners can catch the three points, I believe writing is not a challenging task any more.
