Waiting for Godot
Introduction of Waiting For Godot
Waiting for Godot, written by Samuel Beckett, is an absurd drama that describes Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo) wait for Godot. During two days of waiting, Didi and Gogo happen many absurd conversations in order to pass the time. That is to say, when finishing the two acts of the script, you have no idea what kind of morals the author wants to convey. Furthermore, the plots appearing in the two acts are so similar that whole drama seems to be irrational and meaningless. Much to my surprise, the two characters, Didi and Gogo, don’t see Godot appear in the end of the drama. However, some clues would appear during reading. It is quite interesting for a carful person to notice that the script has mentioned “Nothing to be happened.” at the beginning. Due to the absurd plots and meaningless design, I couldn’t help pondering some questions: Which features lead thousands of people want to explore the legend in despite of distinctive stories? What is Godot and Didi desire to visit ? The two questions, nowadays, haven’t been answered.
Features in The Legend Drama
I try to find reasonable answers according to my life experience and the clues from the script. One of the features I mentioned is constantly repeating. For example, with the progress in the story, the characters perform similar stories-waiting- in both act 1 and act 2. The pattern I saw in the first glance scares me a lot because we indeed live in the same lives as the plot showing to the audiences. For students, they wake up in the morning, write homework, and sleep in the bed at the end of the day regularly. For adult, they brush their teeth in the morning, work for their bosses, and get the salaries in the end of the month again and again. The coincidence makes me arise a sense of fears- the whole world seems to be nothingness. It is interesting that the definition of nature of life isn’t unveil by the author. All explanations depend on the attitude toward our lives.
The Mystery Godot
Some people wonder that who is Godot? One of the explanations says that Godot is equal to God because “Godot” sounds like“God”. However, Beckett denounced the statement and say if he knew about Godot, he would like to depict him in his script. The image of Godot nowadays is unknown, but several clues allow us to infer who is Godot. In end of the drama, they choose to stay rather than leave. It is said that the two roles had wait for not only two days but longer than we imagine. What they waiting for? I think the possible answers are hope and tomorrow. In my observation, as life is not as good as expectation, people always tell themselves” tomorrow will be better.” In this way, the positive thoughts motivate us wait, struggle, and fight for our feature, like the roles stay in order to Godot’s coming.
Although the concept is so pessimistic, this masterpiece brings me a lot of inspirations to the world. If you got the chance, try to enjoy the impressive journal whose story won’t fail you.
