The Impact of Coronavirus Disease
What is Coronavirus?
Common flus will make people lie in beds for a few days, but coronavirus disease would risk your life. Coronavirus, which is also called Wuhan pneumonia or Covid-19, could lead to serious lung disease such as pneumonia, a type of acute infection of lungs. As a result, the fatal rate of Covid-19 for patients with fragile immune systems is considerably higher than those caused by common viruses (Belluck, P. 2020). Belluck P. reports that confirmed cases are about 130,000 and over 4,700 people died from the disease on March 20, 2020. The influences from covid-19 are becoming an emergency issue. With the spread of Coronavirus, three negative effect are existing in several areas.
Concerns of Medical Resources
In the beginning, one of the effects of Covid-19 is the worry of insufficiency for medical resources. Take masks for example. Before pharmacy was opened, people had line up for 30 to 60 minutes in order to purchase face masks. Furthermore, some people have hoarded the masks for fear that the resources of masks are not enough. In order to resolve the chaotic phenomenon, the government tried to facilitate the mask productivity and make the mask rationing plan to ensure everyone can buy enough masks. In addition to hot-selling masks, SET News (2020) mentioned that virus-proof products, hand sanitizer or alcohol for medical use are the list of popular items. Crazy shopping for medical recourses will keep going unless Covid-19 are under control.
Discrimination Crisis
In addition to the absurd phenomenon, Covid-19 accidentally stokes up racial discrimination against Asian people. People around the world regard Wuhan pneumonia originating from China as a public enemy, which generates the grievance against Asians. It is reported by China Global Television Network (CGTN) that a female from Thailand was encountered language attack by a strange man. "They are dirty... (they are) trying to ruin us," the man yelled. Unfortunately, fake information intensifies the irrational situation in CGTN report. Some fake flyers printed official seal of World Health Organization tell people stop Asian-American businesses from the spread of Covid-19 in Los Angeles' Carson area. Therefore, the local authorities aggressively appealed to the public to stay rational and set up a special 211 number for crime report. Finally, the Coronavirus has huge impact on economy. China as a globally industrialized country has a closed relationship with the economy in every area. Take stock market for instance. shares are dramatically falling even though far Europe is no exception. What’s more, Wall street and Dow Jones Industrial decreased 400 points. Gill, A. (2020) in Finance Review stated that the economists from Korea University estimated that it cost about $40 billion based on the globally economic loss for SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), breakout in 2003 to 2004. The economic damage will be maintained if the disease is still unstable.
What Can We Do from The Impact of Covid-19?
The outbreak of Covid-19 has three impacts around the world. First, the fear of Covid-19 increased the demand of medical resources. With the panic around the world, anti-Asian discrimination gradually hurts the international friendship in the affected areas. What’s worse, the disease has caused economic crisis. In my opinion, the duty of stopping the disease is not only local governments’ but also global citizens’ duties. We should get correct information from the official or explore knowledge preventing the infection from deteriorating. Advance preparation can minimize the influences to the lowest.
